The Case

Many eye doctors aren’t sure whether or not to order genetic testing to guide use of AREDS-formulation supplements. Our practice has contributed to the literature that has shown the value of genetic testing, but the opposition to genetic testing by the American Academy of Ophthalmology has been influential. The issue is important. If AREDS-formulation vitamins increase the risk of wet AMD to a significant fraction of patients, we might be inadvertently harming many of our patients.

It is hoped that the attached review will clarify the science and explain how financial considerations have influenced what should have been a strictly scientific question. Free testing kits can be ordered from www.arcticdx.com, and the cost to patients is no more than $50. I am glad to address any questions.
